Light years before political correctness–1983 to be exact–or his comeback in tame Disney comedies, Eddie Murphy was a charismatic, wonderfully offensive, egocentric 22-year-old black comedian known for crude celebrity impersonations and often shockingly frank diatribes on racial and sexual politics. Dressed in a skin-tight red leather suit and delivering endless streams of obscenities faster than Richard Pryor ever did, Murphy is captured in this raunchy HBO special (a filmed document of his Grammy-winning album, Eddie Murphy, Comedian) at his confident, swaggering, comedic peak–a posture that soon disappeared after a string of bland Hollywood comedies. Here, however, his energy and sheer virtuosity command complete control over the audience for 107 minutes, whether he’s mocking personalities like Elvis, James Brown, and Stevie Wonder, or spinning long, gag-filled personal anecdotes about the ice-cream man or dysfunctional family barbecues. There’s no apologizing for the immature stereotyping, blatant homophobia, and sexism (though Murphy did so several years later) that surface during the routine. Steve Martin, Carol Burnett, and Gilda Radner are the special guests in this delightful trio of episodes from the 1970s The Muppet Show. The Martin and Burnett installments are particularly interesting for their atypical formats. Instead of a variety presentation, the Martin show is organized as a series of auditions for new acts, including high-stepping rats, dancing cheese, and the extraterrestrial Four Fazoos. Into the mix comes Martin with his vintage balloon animals, banjo, juggling gear, and arrow-through-the-head prop. It’s a truly original program, and even gets by without the series’ usual canned laughter. Burnett’s show is also built around a unifying concept: in this case, an episode-long dance marathon. Finally, Gilda Radner is paired with a snooty, 7-foot talking carrot (instead of the 7-foot parrot she requested) for a Gilbert and Sullivan medley, and later attempts to tap dance while unintentionally glued to Beaker. This is one of Jack Nicholson’s most underrated performances and director Tony Richardson’s most overlooked films. Nicholson is a member of the U.S. Border Patrol who moves with his materialistic wife (Valerie Perrine) to a small Texas town. There, his new colleagues try to pull him into the web of corruption that runs through the local department and he’s tempted, because the illicit cash will help pay the bills that his charge-happy wife is running up. But his conscience gets the better of him when he gets involved in a case of a young Mexican woman whose baby is stolen to be sold for adoption. Nicholson simmers, stews, and eventually explodes. Michael Nyman came of age as a classical composer in the radical London of the late ’60s. His work embraces multiple vernaculars (jazz, avant garde, conceptual art) and helped cement the foundation of what came to be known as minimalism. Decades into his career, Nyman’s score to Jane Campion’s film The Piano made him a star. The movie’s themes of colonialism and silence (its protagonist, portrayed by Holly Hunter, cannot speak) were perfectly aligned with his longtime interests in world and ambient music. Horn players assist members of the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra in fleshing out Nyman’s stately, hymn-like motifs. On the more heavily orchestrated cues, sentimentality wins out over minimalist restraint; the best tracks feature Nyman on solo piano, playing the rudimentary, faux period repertoire of Hunter’s character. –Marc Weidenbaum

Judge Dredd is one of those movies that doesn’t have a brain of its own, so it can only rip off a lot of ingredients from other, better movies. It’s a mishmash of Blade Runner, Total Recall, and The Road Warrior, with a dash of Star Wars tossed in for good measure. As if that weren’t enough, it’s got Sylvester Stallone, who seems to be the only one in the movie who’s in on the game and knows it’s all a sci-fi scam. Like The Fifth Element a few years later, Judge Dredd depicts a futuristic megalopolis packed with crowded vertical overgrowth and rampant commerce, where anarchy reigns supreme. Violent “block wars” are fought by lawless citizens with machine guns, and Judge Dredd (Stallone) is one of the city’s heavily armed policemen, given free rein to judge and execute the perpetrators of violence. But Dredd himself is subjected to judgment and swift justice when his own gun is identified in the murder of a prominent TV reporter, forcing him to do whatever he can to clear his name. Diane Lane plays his partner in crime-fighting and romance, and Rob Schneider provides juvenile comic relief as Dredd’s streetwise sidekick. Impressive special effects are on vivid display, and the movie’s fun for what it’s worth. Lower your expectations and you just might enjoy it. –Jeff Shannon

Released almost exactly 11 years after Clint Eastwood’s Unforgiven, Kevin Costner’s Open Range proved yet again that the Western is the classic American genre. While it lacks the thematic impact of Eastwood’s masterpiece, Costner’s first film since 1997′s ill-fated The Postman returns the actor/director of Dances With Wolves to the open prairies of America–in this case the free-range frontier of 1882–where legal “free-grazing” cattle drives were falling prey to empire-building land-owners.
