 Ivan Travalian (Al Pacino, SCARFACE) is having a tough time of it. A struggling playwright who is finally getting attention on Broadway, his wife (Dyan Cannon, BOB & CAROL & TED & ALICE) has left him, along with her three kids from another marriage and Travalian’s own son. His lead actress (Tuesday Weld, THIEF), moreover, is interested in moving in as well, but she has possibly insurmountable objections when it comes to children.  Studio: Warner Home Video Release Date: 09/18/2007 Run time: 102 minutesAl Pacino hunts for a serial killer in a lurid world of gay leather bars in Cruising. Because of his resemblance to the victims of a series of slayings, cop Steve Burns (Pacino) goes undercover as a gay man, wandering through wild, gyrating bacchanalias straight out of a Tom of Finland painting, hoping that the killer will be drawn to his dark, tormented eyes. Cruising is a peculiar movie, a gritty police procedural that director William Friedkin (The French Connection, The Exorcist) tried to push into a quasi-metaphysical dimension with some casting tricks and subliminal images. Due to the controversy the movie sparked in the gay community, Friedkin goes to great lengths in the commentary and featurettes to defend the authenticity of the movie’s sources (about a bizarre scene where a muscular black man wearing nothing but a jock strap and a cowboy hat appears out of nowhere and slaps a suspect being interrogated by the police, Friedkin claims this actually happened, though no context is offered). The movie passes no apparent judgment on the overtly sexual scenes in gay bars…yet clearly these scenes are expected to provoke unease in the viewer. Cruising is sure to provoke arguments: Is Pacino’s performance vulnerable or tentative? Is the movie about homophobia or homophobic itself? What does the ending mean? Yet there’s no denying it’s claimed a place in cinematic history; far more people know about it than have seen it. For that–as well as the stylish cinematography–Cruising is worth seeing. –Bret Fetzer

Too old for Hamlet and too young for Lear–what’s an ambitious actor to do? Play the Devil, of course. Jack Nicholson did it in The Witches of Eastwick; Robert De Niro did it in Angel Heart (as Louis Cyphre–get it?). In The Devil’s Advocate Al Pacino takes his turn as the great Satan, and clearly relishes his chance to raise hell. He’s a New York lawyer, of course, by the name of John Milton, who recruits a hotshot young Florida attorney (Keanu Reeves) to his firm and seduces him with tempting offers of power, sex, and money. Think of the story as a twist on John Grisham’s The Firm, with the corporate evil made even more explicit. Reeves is wooden, and therefore doesn’t seem to have much of a soul to lose, but he’s really just our excuse to meet the devil. Pacino’s the main attraction, gleefully showing off his–and the Antichrist’s–chops at perpetrating menace and mayhem. The film was directed by Taylor Hackford (Against All Odds, Dolores Claiborne). –Jim Emerson

After a career slump that plagued him through most of the 1980s, Al Pacino made a stellar comeback in this taut 1989 thriller, playing a weary New York police detective who falls in love with the woman (Ellen Barkin) who is the prime suspect in the murder case he’s investigating. Expertly written by Richard Price and directed by Harold Becker, the story is designed to keep its central characters (and the viewer) in a state of constant suspicion and arousal–an emotional combination that sends dangerous sparks flying between Pacino and Barkin. Their chemistry is intense, and their love scenes are some of the hottest of any movie of its decade. But Sea of Love is not merely concerned with cheap titillation. It’s a riveting whodunit with scenes of nail-biting suspense and memorable dialogue that make it as interesting to listen to as it is to watch. Barkin had made a similarly sexy impression in The Big Easy, and here she gives one of the best performances of her underrated career, matching Pacino’s excellence scene for scene. The ending’s a bit of a letdown because the murder solution comes somewhat out of the blue, but it’s the acting and suspense that you’ll remember most–qualities that make Sea of Love one of the best films of its kind. –Jeff Shannon Amazon.com

Convinced that the terminally ill deserve the right to die with dignity, he shares his beliefs with Jack (James Urbaniak), a Detroit journalist; Janet (Susan Sarandon), a Hemlock Society leader; and Neal (John Goodman), a medical supply salesman (the scenes of Neal and Jack playing poker recall Levinson’s Diner). Before he’s assisted a single patient, Kevorkian makes the national news, prompting Neal to quip, “You’re not a local quack anymore. You’re America’s quack.” Writer Adam Mazer profiles several of the 130 patients to take advantage of his “mercy machine,” starting with Janet Adkins, who suffered from Alzheimer’s disease. For protection, Jack acquires the services of attorney Geoffrey Fieger (Danny Huston), who supports him through evictions, lawsuits, jail time, and hunger strikes–until Kevorkian engineers his own downfall by defending himself. As with HBO’s Recount, Levinson adds archival footage at key points, such that Barbara Walters and others appear to play themselves. As revisionist history, Michael Mann’s intelligent docudrama The Insider is a simmering brew of altered facts and dramatic license. In a broader perspective, however, the film (cowritten with Forrest Gump Oscar-winner Eric Roth) is effectively accurate as an engrossing study of ethics in the corruptible industries of tobacco and broadcast journalism. On one side, there is Jeffrey Wigand (Russell Crowe), the former tobacco scientist who violated contractual agreements to expose Brown & Williamson’s inclusion of addictive ingredients in cigarettes, casting himself into a vortex of moral dilemma. On the other side is 60 Minutes producer Lowell Bergman (Al Pacino), whose struggle to report Wigand’s story puts him at odds with veteran correspondent Mike Wallace (Christopher Plummer) and senior executives at CBS News.
As the urgency of the story increases, so does the film’s palpable sense of paranoia, inviting favorable comparison to All the President’s Men. While Pacino downplays the theatrical excess that plagued him in previous roles, Crow is superb as a man who retains his tortured integrity at great personal cost. The Insider is two movies–a cover-up thriller and a drama about journalistic ethics–that combine to embrace the noble values personified by Wigand and Bergman. Even if the details aren’t always precise (as Mike Wallace and others protested prior to the film’s release), the film adheres to a higher truth that was so blatantly violated by tobacco executives seen in an oft-repeated video clip, lying under oath in the service of greed. –Jeff Shannon
