 In this early action classic that features his unique blend of thrills and offbeat humor, Arnold Schwarzenegger stars as Col. John Matrix, ultimate soldier and one-man army. Matrix, the former leader of a special commando strike force that always got the toughest jobs done, is forced back into action when his young daughter (Alyssa Milano) is kidnapped. To find her, Matrix has to fight his way through an array of punks, killers, one of his former commandos, and a fully equipped private army. With the help of a feisty stewardess (Rae Dawn Chong) and an old friend, Matrix has only a few hours to overcome his greatest challenge: finding his daughter before she’s killed.A massively underrated action thriller that kept Arnold Schwarzenegger occupied between mid-’80s blockbusters, Commando may be one of the last shoot-out films ever to have real characters in it. Not, of course, that they’re anything other than stereotypes, but they’re painted with such detailed, positive strokes that it’s impossible not to relate to them. Arnie plays a retired military special-ops officer whose daughter (played with an expert balance of cute/feisty by Alyssa Milano) is kidnapped by the baddest of bad guys, who’ll only hand her back as and when he’s assassinated a tiresome banana-republic president on their behalf. Needless to say, Arnie is deeply annoyed by this, rescues the moppet single-handed amid more bullets and explosions than you can shake a stuntman’s pay cheque at, and… well, why spoil the fun by revealing any more? Co-star Rae Dawn Chong gets some nice one-liners as the innocent bystander who gets caught up in the mayhem. –Roger Thomas

Arnold Schwarzenegger works the crowds, plots strategies for defeating multiple opponents, shares his parents’ values with the press, and inspires legions of admirers with his resolute optimism about the future. And all of this long before he decided to run for governor of California, in 1977′s hit documentary, Pumping Iron. Larger than life, though not necessarily larger than his rivals for the Mr. Universe and Mr. Olympia bodybuilding titles (especially a young Lou Ferrigno, hot on Arnold’s competitive trail but much less interesting), Schwarzenegger still comes across, at age 28, as a consummate politician, smart, likable, and crafty about exploiting others’ psychological weaknesses. The film still feels redundant (there’s only so much beefcake the human eye will tolerate), but the emotional dramas–the unrewarded hard work, the unanswered hopes–are compelling. Complete with a revealing 2003 interview with Schwarzenegger and a reunion of the film’s bodybuilders and director. –Tom Keogh

Brigitte Nielsen, as Conan creator Robert E. Howard’s female warrior Red Sonja, gets an assist from Arnold Schwarzenegger in this enjoyably campy, Italian-lensed sword & sorcery adventure. Nielsen’s thespian skills may be a bit stiff, but she certainly fills out the physical demands of the role, which asks her to look impressive with a sword as she avenges the death of her priestess sister and the theft of a sacred orb by an evil queen (Sandahl Bergman, also from the ’82 theatrical Conan and a match for Nielsen’s acting ability). Schwarzenegger (not playing Howard’s barbarian king) lends some star power in a supporting role as a warrior assisting Sonja, and if the film stumbles in the acting, scripting, and special-effects departments, Richard Fleischer’s direction and cinematography Giuseppe Rotunno are appropriately action-heavy and comic-book colorful (Fleischer also directed Conan the Destroyer and The Vikings); Ennio Morricone’s bombastic score is another plus. –Paul Gaita
