Police Story
Amazon.com essential video
This classic Jackie Chan picture opens with one of the wildest police action set pieces ever filmed, an extended chase that includes the total destruction of a hillside shanty settlement, as fleeing crooks and pursing cops crash down through it with their vehicles. Overall, however, the picture is an awkward mixture of clashing elements. At first it is a little strange seeing Chan playing it (mostly) straight in a hard-edged police thriller. The fights are all extremely ferocious and real-looking, without the lighthearted slapstick stylization that leavens his best period vehicles, like Project A, Part II. The comedy elements (especially a recurrent cake-in-the-face gag) seem to come out of nowhere; they are no longer integral to the spirit of the movie. But there are wonderful set pieces, stunts, and action scenes, including Jackie struggling to answer a dozen jangling phones at once, when he’s left alone at the police station, and the all-out, glass-smashing fervor of a climactic battle royal in a shopping mall. –David ChuteAmazon.com
Jackie Chan has become a genre unto himself, and watching Police Story, you’ll understand why. The plot is minimal: Chan is a hero cop involved in a raid that goes wrong. He’s assigned to guard a witness, the kingpin’s attractive female secretary (Brigitte Lin). For the rest of the film, Chan’s protecting himself from the secretary, from the gangsters out to silence her, and from his own jealous girlfriend (Maggie Cheung). But watching Chan for plot is like watching porno for existential themes. While most modern action films steal cues from Westerns, Chan condenses those open mesas into the dense throngs of modern Hong Kong–and tosses in Buster Keaton slapstick. For example, when the opening raid goes haywire, there’s an unbelievable car chase through the steep huddle of a hillside shantytown. That’s through. No roads, just shacks. Flimsy shacks. As the film progresses, Chan scales a speeding bus using an umbrella, uses cow dung as an excuse to break into some Shaolin moonwalking, and transforms an urban shopping mall into a demented gymnasium (think clothes racks, escalators, and lots of plate glass displays). Chan is amazingly versatile both physically and emotionally–and he’s a secure enough star-director to let his costars shine, too. –Grant Balfour

The Spy Next Door
Description
THE SPY NEXT DOOR stars Jackie Chan as Bob Ho, an undercover CIA superspy who decides to give up his career in espionage to settle down with his next-door neighbor and girlfriend, Gillian (Amber Valletta). But Bob has one more mission to complete before Gillian agrees to marry him: winning over her three opinionated kids. When Gillian suddenly has to leave town, Bob volunteers to babysit the children so he can earn their approval. But when one of the kids mistakenly downloads a top-secret formula from his computer, Bob’s archenemy, a Russian terrorist, moves in for the attack, forcing Bob to juggle the roles of spy and prospective stepfather in the most challenging mission of his career!Amazon.com
Spy missions for the CIA may be difficult and dangerous, but they’re nothing compared to the challenges of raising a family. Bob Ho (Jackie Chan) is a Chinese spy on loan to the CIA, but to Gillian (Amber Valletta) and her kids Farren (Madeline Carroll), Ian (Will Shadley), and Nora (Alina Foley), he’s just a neighbor and pen salesman. Gillian and Bob are attracted to one another, and Bob is ready to tell Gillian what he really does for a living. He’s prepared to retire from his career in espionage so they can take their relationship to the next level. Unfortunately for Bob, Gillian’s kids are less than impressed with their nerdy neighbor, and that means his relationship with Gillian can’t move forward. When Gillian has to leave town suddenly, Bob volunteers to take care of the children in hopes of “making them” like him. Ian inadvertently downloads a secret file from Bob’s computer, and suddenly the Russian terrorist Poldark (Magnus Sheving) is bent on destroying Bob and the children. As if Bob weren’t having enough trouble negotiating the daily duties of making the children’s breakfast, getting them to school, and keeping track of young Nora in the local mall, he unexpectedly discovers that one of his CIA coworkers is working for the Russians (George Lopez and Billy Ray Cyrus play Bob’s colleagues). Bob finds himself alone in the fight of a lifetime as he battles to keep the children safe from the violent Russian and his associates. The Spy Next Door is full of action-packed martial arts scenes that highlight Jackie Chan’s prowess and will inspire much mock fighting and begging for lessons by school-age children, but it’s also a funny take on the very real difficulties of dating and parenting that adults will readily relate to. While there is a fair amount of fighting in the film, it is tastefully rendered and won’t upset most children ages 7 and older. –Tami Horiuchi

Shinjuku Incident
Amazon.com
Unreleased in mainland China due to its excessive violence, Derek Yee’s crime picture Shinjuku Incident is a rare attempt at serious drama for action star Jackie Chan. As Steelhead, a taciturn mechanic who endures the punishing life of illegal Chinese immigrants in Japan while looking for a missing sweetheart, Chan drops his trademark balletic martial arts and broad comic style, and for the most part he’s successful at conveying the character’s basic goodness and dismay (and finally, anger) at the situation faced by his compatriots. Daniel Wu is also fine as a hapless friend whose entanglement with gangsters forces Steelhead to team with the local yakuza for a gruesome showdown. Stateside audiences who’ve grown accustomed to Chan’s Mr. Nice Guy persona may find his darker turn, as well as the jaw-dropping violence, off-putting; fans of Asian action cinema, however, will appreciate Yee’s noirish aesthetic but may also be split over a Chan who displays neither his astonishing skills nor his considerable charm. –Paul Gaita
