There’s a reason why Cindy Crawford was dubbed “Baby Gia” when she first hit the modeling scene. Indeed, Crawford, now the world’s best-known supermodel, greatly resembled model Gia Carangi, who went from high school to the cover of British Vogue in less than two years. Carangi appeared on many more covers of Vogue (French, British, Italian, and American) and Cosmopolitan before dying of complications from AIDs (she was an IV heroin user) in 1986. Now most people recognize Carangi’s name from this powerful HBO film that stars Golden Globe-winner Angelina Jolie, who comes by her talent honestly. Jolie is the daughter of veteran actor Jon Voight, and her own training as a model serves her well–she has the moves. Throughout, she’s heartbreaking–as no doubt the real Carangi was–effective, and stunning.

With good source material (Stephen Fried’s A Thing of Beauty: The Tragedy of Supermodel Gia), Jolie’s stunning performance, and strong directing by Michael Cristofer, the movie goes beyond the merely sensational. The script was cowritten by Cristofer and novelist Jay McInerney, whose Bright Lights, Big City covers similar territory. As a cautionary tale, Gia works. But to watch Jolie in her character’s tragic self-destruction is utterly compelling. –N.F. Mendoza

  • This is a protest to the person or persons responsible for not posting my first review.I don’t know exactly why it wasn’t posted but, if it had something to do with the profanity(I included the made up word Whatthef!$kedness spelled just like this)then there is precedent in the posted customer reviews of Guns n Roses Appetite for Destruction. If you felt that my review wandered outside the guidelines for customer reviews I have to strongly disagree and point out that one of the customer reviews already attached is merely a suggestion to watch a mostly unrelated tv show about the pornstar Savannah. If it is possible to find my review and post it as written I’d consider it a personal favor.

  • A biopic of Gia–a famous fashion model whose rise to stardom ended abruptly due to her own carelessness. Angelina Jolie (and her piping hot body) stars as Gia. A sad story indeed.

  • Angeline Jolie shows all her assets in this HBO crapfest…and after her clothes hit the floor, she’s got nothing left. Monkey lips tries to portray a model, but ends up looking like a stripper throughout most, and can’t ennunciate to save her idiotic life. Can you say, “Thanks, Dad”?

  • Angelina Jolie was great in this film. She has a truely magnificent rack. They kept me mezmorized just starring and worndering what it would be like to be there, with those perfect pectoral specimens. A great watch, just need the pause button a lot!

  • This movie was insultingly bad. I saw it before I knew anything about it and was shocked to hear it’s gotten so much critical acclaim. My sister – 16 and a usual fan of AJ – and I happened on it on HBO and couldn’t stop laughing at it. (It’s not a comedy). It was trying to be all deep and glamourous, but we thought it was pretentious and silly. If you want to see a movie about drugs messing with people’s lives, try Sid and Nancy, High Art, Train Spotting or Drugstore Cowboy, not this.
